Things to consider when starting up a SEO startup
Rand recently acquired David Mihm’s Get Listed; Blue Glass hit the UK market by acquiring Kevin Gibson’s Quaturo and SEER Interactive come up with their international division by having Aleyda Solis. If you closely map the giants in the industry you will witness that they are investing more on their business and as they are not dumb, I can clearly say that SEO in the coming years are going to boom like anything instead of dying. If you are stilling following “SEO is dead” debate than I would advise you to wake up because it no more offer any traffic or links.
SEO industry is booming and good brands are expanding like anything, technical knowledge is one part but there are certain different things that one should consider in order to start and maintain a good startup that offer profitability.
I thought to list down the things that you should consider before startup a SEO startup
1. Think Inbound
SEO is booming and most businesses are hunting for great SEOs… luckily you might not have to invest hiring smart marketing guys to cold call and get you clients, instead you should consider playing in the inbound ground.
The idea is to grab entities and create value. There are tons of great blogs about SEO you can come up with great ideas, thoughts and share it to the people by writing guest post on these channels, answer to QnAs and help people. Try to create value by helping people instead of hard selling your services.
2. Learn to say NO!
This is one thing that you have to learn or else you will die in the longer run or at least you will not be able to earn more by investing less time on services you offer to your clients.
There are good clients and there are bad clients, you have to understand the difference between them, give second priority to money and hire good clients only by saying NO to all bad clients. Hiring bad clients will not offer you any advantage and you will see yourself spending lot of time following up with money issues.
3. Have a physical Location
Most people think that SEO is kind of a business that you can be run while sitting at the coffee bar having coffee all day long but in the real world this is not the case. If you are looking for a business that saty for years to come you have to have a physical location where you can let your team sit who works for you and slowly and gradually as the business grow you will see SEO business is not really easy to handle as it require more time and dedication then other related IT businesses.
4. Sexy Image on your potential Clients
This is somehow most people and businesses are missing when they are coming up with SEO business. It is always great to stand out from the rest especially in this industry where more and more SEO companies born daily.
One of the sexiest things I know is to have a toll free number with your company name. This is real sexy and attract client and build your positive image on him even before he/she calls you. Do not buy shitting numbers and instead try investing some time and to get the killer number that one can remember in a single go! 1800-flowers did a great job here!
5. Consider spending time on your own website
This might not be a problem in the starting but slowly when you will see clients coming in and you started to get more work… your focus changes and you give more priority to your clients then your own website. I am not saying its bad but neglecting your own website is not going to help you in the longer run.
It is great if you started to consider your own website as a client, set monthly goals, focus and work hard on achieving it instead of just putting it on second priority. Always remember that this is the basic reason you are expending.
SEO is not easy but really interesting if you love to adopt changes from time to time and comfortable with it. Considering the things above will help one set a high end sexy image and value of the brand on potential customers.
